Everyone says they want to be “data driven”.
Most people actually want data to show up in a board pack once a month so they can point at it and continue doing whatever they were going to do anyway.
This is the difference between dashboards and advantage.
Top left is dashboard theatre. Beautiful charts. Live dashboards. Eight filters. A KPI glossary. Zero decisions. The company becomes a museum of metrics, with guided tours every Monday.
Bottom left is meetings about meetings. Data is hard to get, so everything turns into storytelling. Someone screenshares a spreadsheet. Someone asks for “one more cut”. The action item is always “let’s align offline”. Nothing moves because nobody knows what’s true.
Bottom right is vibes based management. Decisions are fast because they’re not constrained by facts. It’s founder intuition, gut feel, and a little bit of bullying. It can work for a while. Then the business gets big enough that vibes can’t route trucks, staff shifts, or price customers.
Top right is the whole point. Data is accessible and decisions are fast. Not reckless. Fast. The team knows what the numbers mean, trusts them, and has permission to act. You fix things weekly. You learn faster than competitors. You compound.
The dashboard isn’t the value creation. The operating cadence is.
If you can’t name the three decisions that your “data transformation” will change next week, you’re not building a data driven company. You’re buying nicer graphs.
The unfair advantage is simple.
Truth, quickly.
Then action, immediately.
