This policy explains what personal data Not Very Private Equity ("NVPE") collects, why we collect it, who processes it for us, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
NVPE is an independent publication operating notveryprivateequity.com. For data protection purposes we are the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us at privacy@notveryprivateequity.com.
What we collect
If you subscribe, we collect your email address, any name you give us, your subscription status and preferences, and records of which emails we sent you and whether they were opened or clicked. This is handled by our publishing platform, Ghost, and our email delivery provider.
If you only read, we collect analytics and usage data: pages viewed, referring site, approximate location derived from your IP address, device, browser and operating system, and interactions such as clicks and scrolling. We use Google Analytics 4 for this.
If you comment, we collect your member account details and the content of your comment, which is public.
Session recording and heatmaps
We use Microsoft Clarity, which records how visitors interact with the site, including mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and page navigation, and reconstructs those sessions as playback and aggregate heatmaps. We use this to find broken and confusing parts of the site.
Clarity masks text entered into form fields by default, and we do not use it to identify individual readers. It is still a recording of your visit, so we would rather tell you plainly than bury it. Microsoft's own handling of this data is described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar identifiers for essential functions such as keeping you signed in, and for the analytics and session replay described above. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though essential functions may stop working if you do.
Why we use it, and our legal bases
To deliver the newsletter and run member accounts: performance of our agreement with you, and your consent where required.
To understand what readers read and to fix the site: our legitimate interest in operating and improving the publication, and your consent where required in your jurisdiction.
To sell and report on sponsorship: our legitimate interest. We share aggregate audience numbers with sponsors, never your personal data.
To comply with law: legal obligation.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share your email address with sponsors or advertisers.
Who processes data for us
Ghost, for publishing and membership. Our email delivery provider, for sending the newsletter. Google, for Analytics. Microsoft, for Clarity. These providers process data on our instructions. Some are based in, or transfer data to, the United States. Where required, those transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep member and subscription data for as long as you remain subscribed and for a reasonable period afterwards. Analytics data is retained according to the retention settings of the relevant platform, and Clarity recordings expire automatically on a rolling basis.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent. In the UK and EEA you may also complain to your data protection authority. If you are a California resident, you have rights of access, deletion and correction, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data, which we do not do.

Opting out
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, which takes effect immediately. You can opt out of Google Analytics using Google's browser opt-out add-on, and reduce Clarity collection by blocking cookies or using your browser's global privacy control setting.
Children
NVPE is written for finance and operating professionals. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Our editorial disclaimers, advertising disclosure and corrections policy are on the Legal, Disclosures & Corrections page.
