Sadly, it cannot enter its own award. Inc is part of Mansueto Ventures and applicants must be independent.

The economics are lovely.

2026 application fees were $395, $495 or $695. Nonrefundable.

Inc does not publish applicant numbers. It does publish 5,000 winners and tells eligible companies with revenue growth that their odds are “very good”.

A reasonable base case is 6,000 applicants paying an average $500.

Application revenue: $3 million.

Then 5,000 winners enter the gift shop.

Current logo packages cost up to $6,550. Logo and social packages reach $6,750. Assume 35 percent of winners spend an average $3,000.

Licensing revenue: $5.25 million.

Assume 40 percent buy a plaque or desktop award at an average $350.

Trophy revenue: $700,000.

The 2022 conference attracted 2,000 attendees. Current tickets cost $1,495 for the gala, $1,995 for the conference and $2,495 for both.

Assume 1,500 paid attendees at a blended $1,900.

Event ticket revenue: $2.85 million.

My rough base case comes to $11.8 million a year.

A cautious case lands around $6.5 million. A more enthusiastic corporate vanity budget gets it near $18 million.

That excludes sponsorship.

The current sponsor roster includes Capital One, Dell, IHG, Insperity, Oracle NetSuite, Salesforce and Google.

I doubt they were admitted out of kindness.

It also excludes advertising, memberships and assorted corporate jewellery.

There is no published requirement to buy advertising, license the logo or attend the gala. Calling the ranking fake would be inaccurate. Companies submit verified financials and the 2026 honorees delivered median three year growth of 130 percent.

Commercially, this is a superb funnel.

The customer pays to apply.

The successful customer pays considerably more to announce the result.

The product is largely intellectual property.

The cohort renews itself every year.

Corporate vanity continues to demonstrate excellent unit economics.

Five thousand businesses compete to prove how successfully they have grown.

Inc earns money from the applications, the winners, the logos, the plaques, the gala, the tables, the advertisers and the sponsors.

The awards business is clearly a very big business.

And the company most likely making the best money from the Inc. 5000 is the company that owns the list.

The real winner sits above the ranking and sends everyone an invoice.
